Papers and photographs, 1966-1970.

Papers and photographs of Dennis M. Truman, a sailor in the Navy during the Vietnam War who served aboard the aircraft carriers USS Forrestal and the USS Kitty Hawk. Materials include newspaper clippings, magazine articles, and a letter from Truman to his mother describing the deadly explosion aboard the USS Forrestal in 1967. Other materials include Truman's military papers such as his discharge from the Navy, bag inspection reports, performance evaluations, and orders as well as ephemeral items like postcards. The oversized folder contains an issue of Life magazine detailing the Forrestal incident. Photographs include numerous shots of Truman in Navy gear and pictures of the ships on which he served. There are also several shots of an initiation rite being performed aboard the Forrestal as several sailors crossed the equator for the first time.
